Graduation Gift from Grandpa
Product Origination
Grandpa Smith, founder of
website5.com, compiled this book after hearing lots
of “older folks” say, “It would be nice to be young again ... if
I could know then what I know now!”
Grandpa's philosophy: Don't make the same
mistake twice and let Grandpa and his friends make it the
first time for you! Ol' Grandpa hopes that his
advice will make the “rocky roads” of life a little smoother for
some young folks to travel on!

Have you ever wanted
to give someone a gift that would save them hundreds or even
tens of thousands of dollars and a lot of time and embarrassment over their
lifetime? Well, now you can!
The author of Graduation Gift from Grandpa is Dr. Richard D. Smith, the founder of Website5.com and 11 other "dot coms". He authored the books shown on this website. Dr. Smith has traveled down the "bumpy roads of life" for over 57 years. His hobbies include flying and even skydiving (Once) His search for the perfect career led him to X-Ray school, Nuclear Medicine school, Optometry school and finally to the website industry. He married and had three step-sons. Two of them are attorneys and the oldest step-son - Collin - was killed in the war in Afghanistan. Dr. Smith will discuss what he has learned through the best and worst times of his life.
Here are just ten groups of examples of Grandpa's advice:
- The "Retail price" is just a price that is created to make the real price seem cheaper when
they say 50% off of the "retail price". Car dealers say "$5,000 off the retail price" or "No
interest for 5 years" or "Get our employee's discount" or $5,000.00 for your trade-in" and then
they rotate the sales over and over. They know that, when people hear the word SALE, they
think they are getting a really good deal so they create a RETAIL price and then they have a
SALE and people "fall for it" over and over.
- Your doctor may be in your "insurance network" and therefore your insurance will pay them
but they may refer you to another doctor or for some lab tests or for chemo therapy and the
place, where they referred you to, may not be in your "network". It's your job to make sure
they are in your network - not your doctor's.
- Your life should be like a date. To have an unforgettable date, you need to put a lot
of effort into it. Imagine this... You find out her favorite food and restaurant. You
ask when the music will be playing. You reserve a window seat at the exact time the
sun will be setting etc. You present her with a bottle of her favorite perfume, just as
you make a toast with her favorite wine. You have already told the violin player to
play her favorite song during the toast. You would expect this date to be very
pleasant so why is it that, when we plan our life, we just let things happen and we
expect to end up with a great profession, a great salary and the perfect life? Your
future is important so take the time to prepare for it!
- Car advice. If your car stops instantly - it's probably electrical. Check the cables on
your battery. If your car won't start, it is probably your battery or alternator but
repair shops almost always sell you both but you can just buy the one that broke if
you want. If you car heater blows cold air, check the radiator fluid! If your car is over
heating and you want to drive it to a repair shop, turn the heater on high and that will
pull heat from the engine. When you buy or sell a car, have a copy of the "Kelley
Blue book" - it will tell you the true value of the vehicles. You can google: Kelley
Blue book.
- When you are young and healthy, buying 10 year "term life" insurance is very cheap
because, if you don't die in the next ten years, the insurance company get to keep ALL of
your money. On the other hand, if you buy the regular insurance, after several years, you
don't have to pay anymore on it but you still are covered for life! Plus, in most cases, you
can cash it in early for a smaller amount - can't do that with "Term Life" insurance. Ask a
lot of questions!
- If your house catches on fire and you have 3 minutes to get out, what should you do?
You should plan ahead for this. Consider people and pets first. You may want to
keep the "back up" to your computer by the door leading outside. (Keep one at work
too.) Being greedy can cost you your life so be extra safe!
- You should never make "knee-jerk" responses because they are mostly based on
emotions but intelligent decisions are based on calm, logically made decisions. If you
dislike someone, your knee-jerk reaction will usually be negative toward that person
even if the logical answer is the opposite. It's easy to yell "That idiot pulled in front
of me" but, when we think about it, haven't we ever done the same thing ... even
once.
- To be successful, you have to focus on your priorities. For example, if you want to
finish your website but you always get tempted to watch TV, you must realize that
next year, you won't be able to remember what TV shows you saw so they aren't
important but your life may be affected negatively if your website isn't done.
- I can assure you that there are thousands of things that I said that I regret but there
are very few things that I never said, that I regret.
- Word tips If salesman says "Is that ok? They probably added on an "option" and are
pretending it is standard equipment or if they say "I'll be honest with you",
something made them think of "honesty" and it may be a lie they are about to tell
you. If you are selling something and the potential buyer say "Will you take less for
it?" Say NO! (If they didn't want it, they wouldn't ask you that.) If they start to walk
away, then you can accept less if you want to but, if they walk away really slowly,
then the game gets interesting.
- A truck driver told me that, if the temperature is app. 32 degrees and you are driving
on the highway, and you want to know if there is ice on the highway, look at the back
of the tires of the vehicle in front of you. If there is a spray coming off of the tires -
no ice - but if there isn't any water spray - ice is present - so slow down. (Don't apply
your brakes or you may cause a skid - just coast to a slower speed.)
- House tips. If you move from job to job, it's hard to build equity in a house. Move to
a city that is growing so your house appreciates in value. If you pick a town where,
for example, General Motors is the only industry and the car industry goes "kaput",
the value of your house "kaputs" also. Buy the least expensive house in a nice
neighbor hood and let the other houses raise your houses value instead of the
opposite. Besides, when you sell it, you'll have a lot of "lookers" because the address
will attract them! Building a gorgeous home in an area that will continue to become
more depressed, simply because it is close to the folks, may not be a great financial
move. Two- story homes reduce the number of possible buyers because older people
can't walk up the stairways. Money invested in a home may appreciate but money put
into an expensive car will be in the junk-yard in 12 years.
OK Two more free ones!
- If the economy is in a recession, then your house probably isn't worth as much as it
was last year so they shouldn't charge you as much for your property tax as they did
last year. Call your auditor!
- When you buy gas, if you let your last number always end in the same number, for example
"5", when you get your credit card statement, you'll be more sure the convenient store worker
never used your credit card information to fill their gas tank.
